Minister for Ecology and Sustainable Planning and Development

Organisation

The Ministre d’Etat, Minister for Ecology and Sustainable Planning and Development is responsible for preparing and implementing Government policies relating to sustainable development and the environment, energy and raw materials, industrial security, transport and transport infrastructures, public works, rural land use planning, urban development, and spatial planning and land & sea development (with the exception of fishing).

His responsibilities are organised into four "operating units": transport and mobility; housing, urban and territorial land use planning; energy policies; and traditional ecological issues.

Environmental summit

The aim of this action on the part of the Government is to make sustainable development central to France’s priorities. The major issues are: tackling climate change, preserving biodiversity and natural resources, protecting humans against the harmful effects of pollution, and developing sustainable production and consumption methods.

5-year action plan :

Bringing together representatives from Government, local authorities and civil society – businesses, trade unions and associations – the summit must produce, by the end of October, an action plan listing 15–20 concrete and quantifiable recommendations. The programme will run over five years. In preparation for this important meeting, six working groups have been established around key themes. They will be led by independent and unbiased persons and will each consist of around 40 people. Once they have put forward their proposals, which they are expected to do by mid-September, these will be commented on by local parties, who will be consulted through inter-regional meetings, and by the general public, who will be invited to share their opinions via Internet chatrooms and forums.
